Lesson Plan Components-PIDP 3100

Lesson Planning Assignment: PIDP 3100 Foundations of Adult Education

Characteristics of Adult Learners
Learning styles
The resource I chose for learning styles can be found at: http://www.vark-learn.com/english/page.asp?p=questionnaire. I chose this questionnaire because it uses real-life scenarios as questions to determine a learning style. The site also provides a handout explaining each learning style, gives examples on how to intake and study information, and how to perform well in tests, exams or assignments. Having my students complete this questionnaire will help them to understand their own learning style and therefore do better in my classes. I will use the results to ensure that I incorporate student learning styles into my lesson planning and demonstrations.

Creating a Positive Learning Environment
Classroom management rules
Creating classroom management rules will be a very beneficial activity to partake in for my classroom. I teach a class of up to 30 students and we spend 6 hours a day together over a six month period. Therefore, having a set of classroom rules that both the students and myself have created together can help us to keep on track, as well as, to remember to treat each other and the classroom with respect. I found a great article outlining how to make classroom rules and it can be found at: http://www.ehow.com/about_5094964_classroom-management-rules.html.

Motivational Techniques
Playing games
For the motivational technique component I chose a resource that incorporates playing a board game with students in the classroom environment and it can be found at: http://www.collaborativelearning.org/bloodcirculation.pdf.
I chose this game because it makes learning about blood circulation fun and interactive. Giving students prizes for winning the game will also help with motivating students to learn and participate. Using a game in the classroom will improve my instruction by taking away from the boring lecture and allowing the students to have some fun while they learn!

Instructional Process/Strategies
Ice breakers
The resource I chose for an ice breaker activity is called “people bingo” and can be found at: http://adulted.about.com/od/icebreakers/qt/peoplebingo.htm. I chose this activity because it is a fun and helps the students get to know one another in an entertaining way. The game focuses on a unique quality each student possess’ and it gets students to interact with one another by having them approach each other to find out who possess’ with quality.  This game will improve my instruction by allowing me to ‘break the ice’ between the students during orientation day.

Media
Video
The media resource I chose is a you-tube video called Scrubs Poo Song and can be found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnIk0npINiE. I chose this video because it incorporates humour to a topic that can be very uncomfortable for students to discuss, let alone deal with. I will use this video as an icebreaker in the classroom for a class topic on elimination. Using this video will help to decrease the awkwardness of the subject, which will then in turn, allow the class to be better able to focus on it.

Trends and Roles Assignment - PIDP 3100

Trends and Roles Assignment
Articles
For this assignment I chose 3 articles to share and review with my partner. The first article is Tech Talk: Mobile Apps for Nurses and can be found at: http://www.nursingcenter.com/lnc/journalarticle?Article_ID=1059927.
The second article I chose is iPads in Nursing Education and Practice: Brief: Literature Review which can be found at: http://firesidelibrarian.com/content/ipads-nursing-education-and-practice-brief-literature-review. Lastly, for a third choice I selected a report titled Advancing Technology in Nursing Education: Intergrating iPads into Clinical Practice and Patient Ed. This report can be found at http://nnlm.gov/mar/funding/reports/robertmorris.pdf.
New Insights
A major insight into the role of the adult educator that I have gained from completing this assignment is that we have to become increasingly more technologically savvy, even outside the classroom. I have also realized that adult educators of the health sciences programs now play a vital role in educating students about the proper use of technology in the health care setting. This can include educating them about the use of technology and its potential impact on patient confidentiality, as well as, teaching them to be ‘tech savvy’ by educating them on how to choose apps and related resources wisely.
Trends
The major trend that my partner and I focused on for this assignment was the use of personal tablets (i-pads), and associated apps in the classroom and in the practicum environment. While researching into this subject I was shocked to find out that the use of i-pads in nursing education is actually very common. I have tried to utilize the use of i-pads or personal tablets inside the classroom, but have never explored their use outside the classroom which can open up many new avenues of education for students.  One of the trends that stood out in the research was that apps are becoming a widely used educational resource in health sciences. For example, it has now become common for nursing students to use a drug manual app instead of using the actual paper manual especially while in the clinical environment. There are a variety of nursing related apps available for students to use and I now plan on doing further research into these so that I can introduce them to my students in order to further increase their learning experience.
Web-Conference
I enjoyed the web-conference experience. My partner and I were easily able to converse regarding trends and roles in each of our closely related fields of study.  I learned that at my partner’s school they are already utilizing i-pads in their student’s educational experience by providing them to use throughout the program which I found fascinating. We debated the effects of new technology both within the classroom, as well as, during the practicum components of our programs. We talked about the worry of possibly hindering students by providing them with ‘the easy’ apps for their personal tablets. We also talked about the concern of students ‘goofing off’ on their tablets or mobile phones during school or while in practicum. Overall, the web-conference was a very engaging experience.

What are employers looking for?

Hi Everyone:

This week in class, my HCA students and I talked about how to go out there and find a job once their schooling is done. I thought this is also a good subject to share with you. According to the presenter we had in class today from our local Health Authority the top 10 qualities employers seek are:

1. Communication Skills (Verbal and Written)

2. Honesty/Integrity

3. Teamwork Skills (works well with others)

4. Interpersonal skills (relates well to others)

5. Motivation/Initiative

6. Strong Work Ethic

7. Analytical Skills

8. Flexibility/Adaptability

9. Computer Skills

10. Attention to Detail

So while working on those resumes of yours be sure to add how you demonstrate these qualities in your cover letter.
Remember, your resume is your way of selling yourself to your future employer!

Sometimes you just gotta laugh when you talk about poop!!

Every time I teach a class on 'elimination' I share this video clip from the show Scrubs showing them sing the "Poo Song"!

Even in the serious health care careers...sometimes you just need to have a good laugh!!

Using Validation Therapy with your Dementia Clients

Hello Everyone:

My HCA students and I have been doing a lot of research lately on how to connect and communicate with the dementia patients that we work with. One of the most break-through therapies is known as Validation Therapy.
Validation Therapy "was developed by Naomi Feil for older people with cognitive impairments and dementia. The basic principle of the therapy is the concept of validation or the reciprocated communication of respect which communicates that the other's opinions are acknowledged, respected, heard, and (regardless whether or not the listener actually agrees with the content), they are being treated with genuine respect as a legitimate expression of their feelings, rather than marginalized or dismissed." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Validation_therapy

Is other words, Validation Therapy is a way for you to enter into the reality of the client with dementia in order to connect with them and help them to feel cared for.

Naomi Feil is such an amazing person and her work with dementia clients has been so beneficial to geriatric health care.

Naomi gives us these 10 principles:
Taken from The Validation Breakthrough: Simple Techniques for
Communicating with People with Alzheimer's -Type Dementia
Naomi Feil (1993)

  1. All people are unique and must be treated as individuals.
  2. All people are valuable, no matter how disoriented they are.
  3. There is a reason behind the behavior of disoriented old-old people.
  4. Behavior in old-old age is not merely a function of anatomic changes in the brain, but reflects a combination of physical, social and psychological changes that take place over the lifespan.
  5. Old-old people cannot be forced to change their behaviors. Behaviors can be changed only if the person wants to change them.
  6. Old-old people must be accepted nonjudgmentally.
  7. Particular life tasks are associated with each stage of life. Failure to complete a task at the appropriate stage of life may lead to psychological problems.
  8. When more recent memory fails, older adults try to restore balance, in their lives by retrieving earlier memories. When eyesight fails, they use the mind's eye to see. When hearing goes, they listen to sounds from the past.
  9. Painful feelings that are expressed, acknowledged, and Validated by a trusted listener will diminish. Painful feelings that are ignored or suppressed will gain strength.
  10. Empathy builds trust, reduces anxiety, and restores dignity.

If you are interested in learning more about Validation Therapy check out this website: https://vfvalidation.org/

Lastly, check out this video of Naomi using Validation Therapy with a client who is virtually non-verbal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrZXz10FcVM

Check out these other interesting Blogs!

Hi Everyone:

I am currently taking a course at VCC where the students in my class are required to create their own blog pages. Check out the following blogs my fellow students have made:

1. http://nursekat.wordpress.com.

- Nurse Kat (another fellow HCA instructor) states that her blog is "a place where Health Care Students can go to and take some time to focus on themselves,  get study tips, find updates on medical advances and find a place to cope with stress. Alas, this Health Care Student Break Room  is the purpose of my blog."

2. http://chemteched.wordpress.com/

-This blog is about Technology & Social Media in Chemistry Education

3. http://krisla12.wordpress.com/

-Kristine's Blog (another fellow HCA instructor!)

Kristine states that her blog "isn’t directed at any person or group of people in particular. I’m writing it for me, primarily, to keep track of my thoughts and the events that happen in and around my work life. I hope, though. that others will enjoy it as well. Stories unfold, wants to be told and lessons learned by others can help  keep you from making their mistakes. Experienced nurses may enjoy reading someone “preaching to the choir”, new nurses may pick up some tricks and tips, future patients/residents and loved ones may appreciate hearing what it’s like on the other side of the stethoscope. Or maybe it’ll just be good for a laughing, a little crying, a little look at human nature. Regardless of why you’re here, I hope you get something out of it.

4.http://peakexpression.wordpress.com

- Excerpt from the about section of the blog "I’ve gone from an Ecology Science Technician to Recreation and Administration to Recreation Therapy and now to Teaching.  My subject area is not nailed down as yet, but in the end I’m sure it will be a blend of all the above with a healthy dose of Wellness mixed in (emotional, cognitive, physical, spiritual, financial, and social ~ well being)."

5. http://joannedennis.ca/?cat=15

"The purpose of this blog is to explore the concept of creativity, sharing in creative thought, and supporting each other and ourselves in our creative endeavors.  This blog is for anyone who wants to develop their capacity for creative expression, and creative thinking."

6. http://bskinner23.wordpress.com/

-Blog about fibromyalgia. The blogger writes "I suffer from chronic pain and have thought about blogging on this subject for years. I finally decided to do so as I find there is a real lack of information out there. I would like to pass on what I have learned through my journey…."

Hi Everyone:

Just wanted to share a link to the Canadian Heathcare Technology Magazine = http://www.canhealth.com/

The magazine reaches over 8,500 readers in Canadian hospitals, clinics, community-care and home-care organizations.
It informs readers about new and noteworthy I.T. implementations at hospitals and other healthcare sites across the country. These installations are profiled because they significantly improve clinical outcomes, reduce costs or raise the efficiency of a healthcare provider.
The magazine also provides news and analysis of technologies, government initiatives and developments among private-sector producers of health-related I.T. solutions.

What's so awesome is that you can download the newest issue free in a PDF format...so go check it out!

BC Cares - Saying Thank you to BC Seniors' Care Providers

Check out http://www.bccares.ca/.
This Thank You initiative was developed through the ongoing work of the Seniors Care Human Resource Sector Committee.

It states on it's web page that " BC Seniors’ Care Providers play an important role in maintaining the quality of life of BC seniors and they have earned our thanks. We value the contribution they are making with the families they support and the communities where they work. Without their skill and dedication, BC Seniors wouldn’t be able to live their best life at home or in care".

On this webpage you can send your thank you messages to seniors’ care providers? Click here to add your message. and of course you can read thank you messages posted by others.

Videos were also created for the campaign and fall into two categories: videos thanking seniors’ care workers for their hard work and dedication, featuring well-known BC personalities; and videos featuring seniors’ care workers describing their work and the training they have received to become a care provider.
Permission is not needed to use any of the materials on this site, so they can be used by anyone!
Click here check out the videos available: Videos

Such a great website and initiative to help us remember why we do what we do and that it doesn't go un-noticed! :-)

A day in the Life of a Community HCA in the Fraser Valley

The link below is an older video taken at the First annual BC Home Support Summit on Oct 16, 2012 in Vancouver BC.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPS6LJckP9I&feature=youtu.be

The summit was an opportunity for BC's care workers to meet others in the industry as well as listen to some amazing and inspiring speakers.

One of the highlights of the day was a conversational panel presented by Dr. Hister, featuring two of the care workers that appear in the BC Says Thank You campaign videos, Mona Morgan and Karen Reeves-Mitchell. They, along with three other care workers, discussed what a day in the life of a community health worker is like.

Amazing Dementia Care Education

Check out these U-tube videos of Teepa Snow, who I would say is one of the best educators of how to care for and understand someone who has dementia. Such a valuable resource for HCA's who are working with dementia patients on a regular basis.
http://www.youtube.com/user/teepasnow?feature=results_right_main
If you are looking to gain some personal educational credits, you can obtain educational certificates in dementia care training by watching Teepa Snow videos on the 'Dementia Care Academy' website:
https://dementiacareacademy.com/static/health_care_professional.htm
This website is also full of many links to other resources for the health care worker.

Who is Katie Anyways??

Hello Everyone:

I just wanted to give you a little backgroud information about me :-)
Off the bat, you might be thinking "why is an RN blogging about HCA's?"
Well, the answer to this question is that I am currently teaching the HCA program at the University of the Fraser Valley in Chilliwack BC. I started this blog as a requirement for a course I am taking at Vancouver Community College towards obtaining my Provincial Instructors Diploma. (for more information of the program you can access the link to your right titled "SIE-Instructor Diploma Program").
I have an extensive background in Health Care, starting with myself being a HCA, which is why I have such a passion for increasing the recognition and respect for HCA's in our Health Care System. Since I have both worked as and worked with HCA's I deeply respect and value their contribution to a health care team.
Hopefully this blog will help me share my passion, as well as, resources pertaining to HCA's, health care and education.
Cheers,
-Katie

Technology in Health Care

Hello Everyone:

Since I am enrolled in a course called 'Media-Enhanced Learning' through VCC which has a focus on the incorporation of technology in education, I am going to try and find interesting articles and links regarding technology in our Health Care System. Just as technology is advancing into the classroom it is also advancing into hospitals, home care and care facilities.
Here is the first article I found in Forbes titled "5 Ways Technology is Transforming Health Care" regarding emerging technology in Health Care:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/bmoharrisbank/2013/01/24/5-ways-technology-is-transforming-health-care/

Stay tuned...more article and links to come!

The Importance of Exercise

While teaching about the importance of exercise both for HCA's and their patients and clients I came across this awesome U-Tube video, explaining the amazing benefits of just 30 mins. a day of exercise.
Such a powerful video, hopefully that will help inspire you to get up and get moving!

Welcome

Hello and welcome to 'The Caring Corner' blog spot.
I am hoping that this blog can become an informative and supportive place for anyone teaching, working as, or working along side Health Care Aides.
Sadly, Health Care Aides are often the most unrecognized member in a Health Care Team, and I want to change that!
Health Care Aides are extremely valuable and important in providing exceptional care and support to those that we love. So let us honor the incredible job that they do and share any education or information that we can to help improve, acknowledge and support their hard work.
